Historic Lake City Main Street Program

--
A downtown revitalization project of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Main Street Program is developed and funded locally. Coordinated city and county efforts have been instrumental in encouraging private investors and recruiting new businesses to the area, which is an integral part of the program.

An excellent tour developed by the Main Street Program provides a glimpse into the life of the last hundred years.

The Lake City Historic Commercial District

--
The Lake City Historic Commercial District consists of all or parts of fifteen blocks in Lake City’s downtown commercial area. Most of the buildings in the district front on North Marion Street, which is part of U.S. Highway 441. During the historic period the area of Marion Street between Railroad and Duval Streets contained an almost unbroken line of commercial buildings. Since World War II, however, a number of those buildings have been razed. They have either been replaced by modern buildings or their lots left vacant, creating an obvious gap between some of the contributing resources of the area. For this reason, the boundaries of the district encompass two discontinuous areas, which share a common period of significance and contribute to an understanding of the extent of the city’s historic commercial sector.

The Lake Isabella Historic Residential District

--
The Lake Isabella Historic Residential District consists of all or parts of thirty blocks southeast of Lake City’s downtown area. The district encompasses a large and concentrated collection of buildings that reflect national trends in architecture during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The area surrounding Lake Isabella, was among the most desirable locations for residential construction during the historic period due to its natural beauty and close proximity to the commercial downtown section.

The complete tour is available by request.

Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center

--
17 miles North of Lake City in White Springs, Fl. on the banks of the famous Suwannee River 386-397-1920.

The Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center fulfills two purposes. Appropriately situated on the Suwannee River, the 247 acre center honors the memory of Foster, whose song " Old Folks at Home" memorialized the picturesque stream. It also serves as a gathering place for those who perpetuate the crafts, music and legends of early and contemporary Floridians.

Dioramas which depict scenes described in some of Stephen Foster’s most famous songs are housed in the Stephen Foster Museum and in the Carillon Tower, along with other exhibits. The Carillon Tower is also home to the world’s largest tubular bell instrument. Guided tours of the Stephen Foster Museum and Carillon Tower exhibits are given daily.
